The word cello is short for violoncello, which means little violone. Violone refers to the bass violin of the 1500s, which was larger than a modern double bass. When wire-wound strings that created a finer bass sound were invented around 1660, Italian instrument makers used them to create the cello. Its timbre and smaller size enabled virtuosic solo performance. The expressive dynamic nuances of cello music are created through pronation, or inward rotation, of the right arm that allows variation in the arm weight on the bow as the bow is drawn across the strings, and vibrato, an oscillation in pitch caused by rotation of the left arm.
Most music for voice or a melodic instrument can be played on the cello. As the cello is the instrument most like the human voice, vocal music sounds lovely on the cello.
For clients interested in cello, Michelle arranges private meetings and plays for the clients in person.
